EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie Louise of Austria (1791-1847), the present Empress of the French, is depicted in this elegant portrait. Born as Maria Anna Carolina of the Two Sicilies, she was later adopted by Emperor Leopold II of Austria and raised as his daughter. In 1810, at the age of 20, Marie Louise became the second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, the French emperor. The marriage was a political move aimed at securing the support of the Austrian monarchy and the European powers. Marie Louise was a skilled diplomat and a gracious hostess. She was also known for her beauty, intelligence, and strong will. In this portrait, Marie Louise is shown wearing the diamond diadem of the French imperial crown, a gift from her husband. The delicate lace collar and the richly embroidered robe reflect the opulence of the imperial court. The marriage between Napoleon and Marie Louise produced a son, Napoleon II, who was recognized as the king of Rome. However, the couple's relationship was not a happy one. Napoleon was often away on military campaigns, and Marie Louise grew disillusioned with the political instability and the chaos of the Napoleonic regime. In 1814, after Napoleon's defeat in the War of the Sixth Coalition, Marie Louise and her son were exiled to Austria. She spent the rest of her life in Vienna, where she became a patron of the arts and a respected figure in Austrian society. Marie Louise's legacy as the last empress of the French and the mother of the last French king continues to intrigue historians and scholars. This portrait is a testament to her beauty, grace, and the complex history of the Napoleonic era.
