EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense and focused gaze of Lieutenant General William T. Sherman, one of the most influential military figures in American history. Sherman's military career spanned over four decades, during which he played a key role in the Civil War, leading the Union Army to victory in the western theater. Born on February 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio, Sherman showed an early aptitude for military strategy and discipline. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1840 and went on to serve in the Mexican-American War, where he distinguished himself as a brave and capable officer. During the Civil War, Sherman gained fame for his innovative military tactics and his relentless pursuit of Confederate forces. He is perhaps best known for his March to the Sea, a military campaign that began in November 1864 and resulted in the destruction of much of the Confederate infrastructure in Georgia. Sherman's tactics were controversial at the time, but they are now recognized as a turning point in the war. After the Civil War, Sherman continued to serve in the army, eventually becoming Commanding General in 1869. He played a key role in reconstructing the South and implementing policies to help former slaves transition to freedom. Sherman retired from the army in 1883 and died on February 14, 1891. This portrait, taken during Sherman's tenure as Commanding General, captures the intensity and determination that defined his military career. With his piercing gaze and stern expression, Sherman appears ready to lead his troops into battle once again. The portrait is a testament to the indelible impact he had on American history and the enduring legacy of his military achievements.
