EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting portrait captures Lady Elfrida Eden, later known as Lady Brooke, with her newborn son, Charles Guy Fulke Greville, in the year 1912. Lady Elfrida, the former Countess of Warwick and Brooke, is seen cradling her baby boy in a soft, flowing gown, her expression filled with love and adoration. The young Charles, the future 7th Earl of Warwick and 7th Earl Brooke, gazes up at his mother with innocent curiosity. At the time of this photograph, Lady Brooke and her husband, the Hon. Francis Greville, were living at Warwick Castle, the historic family seat that had been in their possession for centuries. The aristocratic family's lineage could be traced back to William the Conqueror, and the castle had been a symbol of their power and prestige for generations. However, Lady Brooke and her husband's tenure at Warwick Castle would be the last for the family before its sale in 1978. In the intervening years, Charles would grow up to become the first British aristocrat to star in a Hollywood movie, earning him the nickname "Duke of Hollywood" by the local press. His film career began in 1935 with the release of "The Private Life of Henry VIII," in which he played the role of the Duke of Norfolk. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a British aristocrat and her newborn son in the early 20th century, a time of change and transition for both the family and the country.
