EDITORS COMMENTS
La Journee du Pas-de-Calais" Charity Card - A Symbolic Call for Generosity during World War I This evocative postcard, dating back to 1916, is a poignant reminder of the charitable efforts that took place in the Pas-de-Calais region of France during World War I. The image on the card depicts a British troop ship arriving in France, with smoke billowing from its chimneys. At the forefront of the scene, the British Lion, a powerful and iconic symbol of the United Kingdom, is shown mauling the German Eagle. This powerful image serves as a potent symbol of the Allied forces' determination and resolve to defeat their enemies. The reverse side of the card bears the inscription, "La Journee du Pas-de-Calais," which translates to "The Day of Pas-de-Calais." This charity campaign was initiated to raise funds for the local population in the region, which had been severely impacted by the war. The card was sold in over 700 communes (municipalities) throughout the department, and was accompanied by a small floral pin, still attached to the card. The use of symbolism in the image is noteworthy, as the British Lion's attack on the German Eagle served as a powerful piece of Allied propaganda. The image conveyed a sense of patriotism and unity among the Allied forces, and was a call to action for the public to support the war effort through charitable giving. This postcard is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and resilience of the people of France during World War I, and serves as a testament to the power of symbolism and the human spirit in times of adversity.
