EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, Kid Lewis, a triple boxing champion and former holder of the world welterweight title, is seen posing with Sir Oswald Mosley, the charismatic leader of the New Party, at a luncheon held at the Caf Royal in London in 1931. The New Party, which was formed by Mosley after his resignation from the Labour Party, aimed to address the economic crisis brought about by the Great Depression through a national policy outlined in the Mosley Memorandum. At the time of this image, the New Party was still in its infancy, and Mosley was yet to fully embrace the ideology of Fascism that would later define his British Union of Fascists (BUF). The photograph captures a moment of optimism and collaboration between the sports and political worlds, with Lewis, a popular figure in Whitechapel, East London, lending his support to Mosley's political vision. The New Party's approach to politics and sport was unique for the time, with the intention of creating a club movement where both spheres would play a prominent role. The image of Kid Lewis and Oswald Mosley together serves as a reminder of this intriguing historical moment when a boxing champion and a political leader joined forces to address the challenges of their time. This photograph, taken in 1931, offers a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of British history, showcasing the intersection of sport and politics, and the charismatic figures who shaped it.
