John Cornelius: An Unwavering Faith in the Face of Persecution This evocative photograph print depicts John Cornelius, an Irish Jesuit priest and martyr, who lived during the tumultuous 16th century. Born in County Limerick, Ireland, in 1557, Cornelius was educated at the English College in Rome and joined the Society of Jesus in 1576. His commitment to his faith and his vocation led him to return to Ireland during a time when Catholicism was under relentless persecution. During his time in Ireland, Cornelius served as a priest and a teacher, secretly ministering to the Catholic community. In 1594, he was captured by English authorities and brought before the Assizes Court in Cork. Despite being tortured and offered leniency if he renounced his faith, Cornelius remained steadfast in his beliefs. He was subsequently sentenced to death and hanged on March 25, 1594, at the age of 37. John Cornelius' martyrdom became a symbol of the unwavering faith and resilience of the Irish Catholic community during a time of great adversity. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Irish Catholics and is a testament to the enduring power of faith in the face of persecution.
