EDITORS COMMENTS
IBARRURI, Dolores (1895-1989), also known as "La Pasionaria," is depicted in this striking portrait captured by Spanish photographer Santiago Pelegrin for the publication "El altavoz del frente" in Salamanca, Spain. The image, held in the Archivo Histórico Nacional, captures the intensity and determination of the communist leader. Born in the Basque Country in 1895, Ibarruri rose to prominence as a labor organizer and political activist during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Her fiery speeches, filled with passion and conviction, earned her the nickname "La Pasionaria," or "The Passion Flower." She became a symbol of resistance against the Nationalist forces led by Francisco Franco, and her speeches were broadcast over the Republican radio, inspiring millions of people across Spain. Despite facing persecution and exile after the Nationalists' victory, Ibarruri remained committed to the cause of social justice and democracy. She continued to work for the Communist Party and was a vocal critic of the Franco regime until her death in 1989. This powerful portrait, taken in Salamanca during the height of the Spanish Civil War, serves as a testament to Ibarruri's enduring legacy as a symbol of resistance and hope during a dark period in Spanish history.
