EDITORS COMMENTS
Here, Puss, Puss!: A Playful Political Satire from the August 5, 1908, Issue of Puck Magazine In this whimsical cartoon from the August 5, 1908, issue of Puck Magazine, two political heavyweights, William Jennings Bryan and William H. Taft, are depicted as children attempting to win the favor of a mischievous feline named Labor Vote. The cat, whose face bears a striking resemblance to Samuel Gompers, the American Federation of Labor's president, sits regally on a chair, its paw poised for a potential swipe. Bryan, dressed in a blue shirt and knickers, extends a bowl of "Anti-Injunction Cream," a reference to the ongoing debate over the Sherman Antitrust Act and its application to labor unions. Taft, wearing a red shirt and short pants, offers a sprig of "Anti-Injunction Catnip," a playful allusion to the political maneuvering and compromise that often characterized the political landscape of the time. The scene is set to eight lines of verse that accompany the image: Here, Puss, Puss! Come to us, dear feline, And let us learn to get along with thee, With cream and catnip, we'll try to be kind, To win thy favor, and thy vote, we'll be blind. But if thou scratches us, we'll surely fight, And in the political arena, we'll take our might, With words and deeds, we'll strive to outwit, Our feline friend, and claim our rightful bit. So here we are, on bended knee, With offerings sweet, and hearts open wide, Oh, Labor Vote, we humbly plead, Will thou, dear cat, allow us to lead?" This delightful cartoon serves as a reminder of the political climate of the early 20th century, where even the most serious issues were not immune to a bit of playful satire.
