EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Hans Van Ries (1553-1638), a prominent Flemish churchman and philosophical writer of the late Renaissance period. Born in Antwerp, Van Ries initially pursued a career in law before turning to theology and philosophy. He was ordained as a priest in 1582 and went on to hold various ecclesiastical positions, including that of a canon at the St. Paul's Cathedral in Antwerp. Van Ries is best known for his philosophical works, which were heavily influenced by the ideas of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. His most famous publication, "De Natura et Operibus Diaboli" (On the Nature and Works of the Devil), was published in 1612 and explored the nature of evil and the devil's role in human affairs. The work was widely read and influenced later thinkers, including the French philosopher René Descartes. Despite his intellectual pursuits, Van Ries remained deeply committed to the Catholic Church and its teachings. He wrote numerous theological works, including commentaries on the Bible and the works of St. Augustine. Van Ries also played a role in the Counter-Reformation, using his writings to defend Catholic doctrine against Protestant criticisms. This print captures the intellectual intensity and spiritual depth of Hans Van Ries, a man who straddled the worlds of theology, philosophy, and the Church. His legacy continues to be felt in the fields of philosophy and theology, and his works remain an important part of the intellectual heritage of the Western world.
