EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the S.M.S. Zander, a German fresh water vessel from World War I, navigating through the intricate waterways of Belgium and Northern France. The image offers a glimpse into the vital role these boats played in the German war effort during the conflict. In 1916, around 170 of these motor boats were in operation, manned by a personnel of 450 German officers and men. These sturdy vessels, measuring 43 feet in length, were delivered by the Anker Yard in Berlin and were specifically designed for the transportation of provisions, ammunition, mail, and even troops, as well as towing strings of laden barges. The S.M.S. Zander, featured in this photograph from 1917, is a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. The boats were essential for the German military, as they could navigate the numerous canals and waterways that were inaccessible to larger vessels. Their versatility and maneuverability made them indispensable for the efficient movement of supplies and troops to the front lines. The First World War saw the utilization of various modes of transportation to support military operations, and these motor boats played a crucial role in the German war effort. This photograph offers a unique perspective into the history of this often-overlooked aspect of the war, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past.
