George Ernest Studdy

George Ernest Studdy (1878 - 1948), the famous Sketch artist and creator of Bonzo, surrounded by various drawings of his creation. Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in The Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Studdy also produced a large body of work for the Sketch before and after Bonzo including his later creation, Ooloo the cat. His early cartoon dogs were simply known as the Studdy Dog until readers demanded a name and Bruce Ingram, the ILN editor, suggested his immortal moniker. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, renowned Sketch artist George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948) is seen surrounded by an enchanting assortment of his most famous creations: Bonzo, the small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding. The inception of Bonzo graced the pages of The Sketch in 1922, and the ensuing craze that ensued was nothing short of extraordinary. Bonzo's charm transcended borders, leading to an avalanche of merchandise, including postcards, annuals, and toys, that captured the hearts of people worldwide. Studdy's artistic talent extended far beyond Bonzo, as evidenced by the myriad of drawings that adorn the walls and tables in this image. His early canine illustrations, simply known as the Studdy Dog, were later christened with the immortal moniker "Bonzo" by Bruce Ingram, the editor of the Illustrated London News. Prior to and following Bonzo's debut, Studdy produced an extensive body of work for The Sketch, culminating in the introduction of another beloved character, Ooloo the cat. The photograph captures Studdy in the midst of his creative process, immersed in the world of his whimsical creations. The image is a testament to the power of art and the enduring appeal of the characters that George Ernest Studdy brought to life. This photograph is a precious piece of history, offering a glimpse into the life of a man whose work left an indelible mark on the world of illustration.
