EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the historic moment of the formation of the National Constituent Assembly in Paris on 9 July 1789, during the early stages of the French Revolution. The National Constituent Assembly was born out of the National Assembly, which had been convened in May 1789 to address the financial crisis of the French monarchy. As the revolutionary fervor grew in the streets of Paris, the Third Estate, representing the common people, declared themselves the National Assembly and took an oath to establish a new constitution for France. This unicameral legislative body, which dissolved on 30 September 1791, was a pivotal moment in French history. The National Constituent Assembly marked the end of the monarchy's absolute power and the beginning of the modern French state. The assembly drafted and adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which established the fundamental principles of liberty, equality, and property rights. The scene in the print shows the members of the National Constituent Assembly gathered in the Salle des Menus-Plaisirs in the Palace of Versailles, taking their oath to the king, Louis XVI, and the nation. The 19th-century engraving captures the revolutionary spirit of the time, with the people's representatives determined to create a new and just society for all. This momentous event took place against the backdrop of the 18th century, a period of great change and upheaval in Europe, as monarchies across the continent faced challenges to their authority and the people demanded greater representation and rights.
