Francisco Espoz y Mina: A Heroic Spanish Military Commander in the War Against Napoleon This portrait showcases Francisco Espoz y Mina (1781-1836), a renowned Spanish military commander who played a pivotal role in the Peninsular War against Napoleon Bonaparte. Born in the Basque Country, Mina rose through the ranks of the Spanish military, demonstrating exceptional leadership and bravery in battle. During the Peninsular War (1808-1814), Mina gained fame for his victories against the French forces, which had invaded Spain. One of his most notable achievements was the capture of the French stronghold of Saragossa in 1809, a siege that lasted for six months and resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 French soldiers. Mina's tenacity and determination earned him the nickname 'El Empecinado' (The Obstinate One) among the Spanish people. Despite his successes, Mina faced numerous challenges, including political intrigue and betrayal. In 1812, he was captured by the French and sent to France as a prisoner. However, he managed to escape and returned to Spain, where he continued to fight against the French occupation. After the Peninsular War, Mina played a key role in the Spanish uprising against the liberal forces during the First Carlist War (1833-1839). He was eventually defeated and killed in battle in 1836.
