Commodities Fixing Household Maximum Outbreak Panic Panicking Prices

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the chaotic first weeks of World War One, the outbreak of conflict sent shockwaves through the civilian population, instigating widespread panic and fear of the unknown. This poignant illustration captures the sad fate of a typical family, their faces etched with worry and despair, as they confront the harsh realities of soaring food prices. As the war front advanced, the home front was also under siege. The disruption of trade routes and the diversion of resources to the military effort led to a severe shortage of essential commodities, particularly food. Panic buying and hoarding exacerbated the situation, driving prices to unprecedented heights. In response to the crisis, the British government intervened, implementing a series of measures to stabilize the situation. On August 4, 1914, just a week after the outbreak of war, the Price of Food and Household Commodities Order was passed, fixing maximum prices for certain essential foodstuffs and household items. The aim was to prevent further price increases, ensure a steady supply of food, and prevent profiteering. The illustration serves as a poignant reminder of the hardships faced by families during the early days of the war, and the desperate measures taken by the government to alleviate the crisis. As we commemorate the centenary of this pivotal moment in history, it is a timely reminder of the resilience and resourcefulness of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
