Badger Civet Civetta Cuvier Dictionary Frederic Gabriel Meles Pretre Stipple Civettictis

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases two fascinating European mammals: the European badger (Meles meles) and the civet (Civettictis civetta). The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The meticulous engraving was executed by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The European badger, depicted on the left side of the print, is a large, stocky mammal with a distinctive black and white striped face and a long, curved snout. They are omnivorous animals, feeding on a variety of vegetation, roots, insects, and small vertebrates. European badgers are well known for their extensive burrow systems, which can extend up to 300 meters in length and house multiple families. On the right side of the print, the civet (also known as the European civet or the European polecat) is shown. This small, agile mammal has a slender body, short legs, and a bushy tail. They are characterized by their distinctive scent glands, located near their anus, which they use to mark their territory. Civets are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, insects, and small vertebrates. They are also known for their role as a primary disperser of seeds in their habitats. This stunning engraving is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of natural history illustrations during the early 19th century. It provides a glimpse into the natural world of Europe during this time, showcasing two unique and fascinating mammals that continue to captivate our curiosity and imagination.
