Galicia Hispania Iberian Monarch Monarchy Peninsula Septimania Visigoths Euric

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Euric (c. 440-484), the illustrious King of the Visigoths, who ruled from 466 until his death in 484. His capital was located at Toulouse in what is now southern France, making him a significant figure in the history of both France and Spain. Euric is an essential character in the annals of European history during the High and Middle Ages, particularly in the context of the Iberian Peninsula. Born around 440, Euric ascended to the throne following the death of his father, Theodoric II. During his reign, he worked to consolidate Visigothic power and expand their territory, which included the regions of Septimania (present-day Languedoc) and parts of Galicia in northwest Spain. Euric's rule was marked by a series of military campaigns against the Romans, the Suevi, and the Alans, which resulted in significant territorial gains for the Visigoths. He is also remembered for his efforts to promote Christianity within the Visigothic kingdom, issuing decrees that favored the religion and eventually adopting it himself. This portrait of Euric, created in the 19th century, offers a glimpse into the visage of a monarch who played a pivotal role in the political landscape of Europe during the 5th century. The engraving, produced during the Romantic era, highlights the regal bearing and authority of this powerful king, whose legacy continues to be felt in the history and culture of Europe.
