"This evocative photograph captures the majestic Ellerman Line Steam Ship, City of Westminster, as it gracefully slices through the tranquil waters of the English Channel in the late 1920s. The City of Westminster, a proud addition to the Ellerman Line fleet, was a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of ocean travel during this era. Built in 1915, the ship was named after the historic City of Westminster in London, and was renowned for its luxurious amenities and elegant design. With a tonnage of over 10,000 gross register tons, it could accommodate up to 1,000 passengers and boasted a spacious deck, grand dining rooms, and comfortable cabins. Sadly, the City of Westminster's glory was short-lived. In 1923, the ship was involved in a tragic collision with another vessel, the SS City of Paris, off the coast of Ireland. Despite valiant efforts to save her, the City of Westminster sank, resulting in the loss of over 50 lives. This photograph, taken in 1925, serves as a poignant reminder of the City of Westminster's former splendor and the tragic end to its illustrious career. The image captures the essence of a bygone era, when ocean travel was an exciting and luxurious adventure, and the promise of a new destination lay just beyond the horizon."
