The Chaperon by Jocelyn Brandon & Frederick Arthur. First produced at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne on 21st April 1013 and at The Strand Theatre on 26th April 1913. Presented by Louis Meyer. The image of a woman between two men indicates the nature of the farce, in which, among other awkward situations, a married woman dining with her lover and a chaperon is more attracted to the latter. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "The Chaperon," is a vintage print from 1913, showcasing a theatrical moment from the popular farce of the same name. The play, which was first produced at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne on April 21, 1913, and later at The Strand Theatre on April 26, 1913, was presented by Louis Meyer. The intriguing scene depicted in the print involves a woman, elegantly dressed in a flowing gown and adorned with a feathered hat, sandwiched between two men. The nature of the farce is suggested by the awkward expression on the face of the married woman, who seems more attracted to the suave gentleman on her left, played by the chaperon, than to her husband or lover on her right. The artist, Jocelyn Brandon and Frederick Arthur, have signed the illustration, although the surname of the artist is somewhat difficult to read, appearing to be "Bert Tyemoe." The gentlemen are dressed in formal attire, including tails and top hats, adding to the theatrical ambiance of the scene. The print offers a glimpse into the popular entertainment of the time, with its strolling men, walking canes, and comedic situations.
