EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the tense moment during the Second World War when a Catalina flying boat, a type of seaplane used primarily for long-range patrol and transport, spotted the heavily damaged German battleship Bismarck in the midst of a tumultuous sea. The image, taken by renowned photographer G.H. Davis, depicts the Catalina under severe attack from enemy fire, as it courageously reported the battleship's position to the Allied fleet. The Bismarck, one of the largest and most powerful battleships of the German Navy, had been engaged in the Battle of the Denmark Strait on May 26, 1941, and was attempting to return to Germany for repairs. The position reported by the Catalina ultimately led to the Bismarck's final destruction, some 400 miles off the coast of France. The scene is further enlivened by the ominous clouds overhead, adding to the sense of drama and danger. This historical photograph is a testament to the bravery and strategic importance of air reconnaissance during wartime.
