This photograph captures Major Sir Nevile Rodwell Wilkinson (26 October 1869 - 22 December 1940), a distinguished British officer of arms, army officer, author, and dollhouse designer, as he takes a moment of respite during the tumultuous events of the First World War. Dressed in his full uniform as a Major in the British Army, Wilkinson is seen engrossed in an issue of The Tatler, a popular British magazine known for its society news, gossip, and entertainment. Born in 1869, Wilkinson was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1890 and promoted to Captain in 1899. He served in the Second Boer War and retired from the army in 1907. However, he was called back to duty during the First World War, this time as a staff officer, and was promoted to Major in 1915. Despite his military duties, Wilkinson had a diverse range of interests. He was an accomplished author, penning several works on heraldry and genealogy, and was also a talented dollhouse designer. This photograph, taken in 1916, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who, amidst the chaos of war, found solace in the pages of a magazine. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of life during wartime, where even the most decorated soldiers found moments of relaxation and amusement.
