EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the final moments of Captain Loxley of the Royal Navy, as he stands bravely on the sinking deck of HMS Formidable in the English Channel during the early hours of New Years morning, 1915. With his trusted terrier Bruce by his side, Captain Loxley issues his last order to another ship, warning of the imminent danger of torpedoes. The HMS Formidable had been attacked by a submarine and was slowly sinking, but the Captain remained on the bridge, refusing to abandon ship until the safety of his crew was ensured. As the boat began to go under, Captain Loxley was last seen with his arms folded, a picture of calm and resolve as the water closed in around him. This painting, titled "Clear Off - Submarines About: Captain Loxley of the Royal Navy," is a reproduction from the special panorama supplement "Great War Deeds," produced by the Illustrated London News in 1915. It serves as a powerful reminder of the heroic and courageous actions of Captain Loxley and the British Navy during World War I.
