EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a groundbreaking fashion creation from a New York fashion house in 1909, designed specifically for lady aviators. The ensemble, referred to as an "aeroplane gown," was a daring departure from traditional women's clothing of the time. The dress featured a divided skirt, allowing for greater freedom of movement while piloting an aircraft. However, the most notable aspect of this costume was its buttonless design. The back opened on the left side, fastening with hooks, making it easy for women to put on and take off while wearing gloves. The accompanying trousers, reaching to the ankles, were an essential part of the outfit. They were held up with rubber bands just below the knee, providing both functionality and style. The width of each pantaloon measured an impressive 56 inches, ensuring ample room for comfort and ease of movement. This fashionable yet practical design was a testament to the growing influence of the aviation industry on women's fashion during the Edwardian era. As more women took up flying, the need for clothing that accommodated their newfound freedom and independence became increasingly important. This buttonless outfit, with its divided skirt and practical trousers, represented a significant step forward in women's aviation attire. This photograph, taken in 1909, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of women's fashion and the role it played in the burgeoning world of aviation. The image is a reminder of the courage and determination of early lady aviators, who defied societal norms and embraced the thrill and adventure of flight.
