EDITORS COMMENTS
Bonzo's Daring Swim Across the Channel: A Playful Moment Captured by George Studdy In this delightful illustration by renowned British artist George Ernest Studdy, Bonzo, the beloved small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding, attempts to swim the English Channel, much to the amusement of the Bonzolines gathered on the shore. The scene is set against the backdrop of a sunny summer day at the seaside, with the sparkling blue water stretching out before them. Bonzo, with his characteristic mischievous expression, is seen paddling determinedly in the water, his tail wagging in excitement. A crab, seemingly unfazed by the commotion, scuttles along the shoreline, adding to the whimsical atmosphere. The Bonzolines, who have become an integral part of Bonzo's legend, are seen laughing and clapping in delight at the pup's antics. Studdy's illustration, published in The Illustrated London News on August 29, 1923, captures the essence of leisure and fun during the 1920s. The Bonzo craze, which had swept the world by this time, resulted in an abundance of merchandise, including postcards, annuals, toys, and other collectibles. This charming print, a testament to the enduring appeal of Bonzo and his adventures, is a must-have for any collector of vintage illustrations and memorabilia.
