12th 13th Bombardment Charleston Fort Sumter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the intensity and chaos of the Bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on the 12th and 13th of April, 1861. The event marked the beginning of the American Civil War, as Confederate forces under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on the federal fort from ships anchored in the harbor. The fort, which was manned by a small Union garrison led by Major Robert Anderson, was quickly overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the Confederate artillery. The image depicts the moment of the initial bombardment, with plumes of smoke rising from the fort and the water as the Union flag, which had been flying defiantly since the start of the crisis, is seen being lowered. The Confederate ships, anchored in the foreground, are filled with soldiers eager to join the fight. The USS Star of the West, a civilian supply ship attempting to reach Fort Sumter with much-needed provisions, is seen in the background, having been mistakenly targeted and set ablaze by Confederate fire. The Bombardment of Fort Sumter was a pivotal moment in American history, marking the end of the peaceful resolution of the growing tensions between the North and South and the beginning of a long and devastating conflict. This print, with its dramatic composition and intricate detail, offers a glimpse into the events of that fateful day and the beginning of the Civil War.
