1629 1698 Baptist Keeper Privy Purse

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the stern yet dignified visage of Baptist May (1629-1698), a prominent English statesman and keeper of the Privy Purse for King Charles II. The Privy Purse was a royal household department responsible for managing the king's personal finances, and May held this position from 1660 until the monarch's death in 1685. Baptist May's career in public service began in earnest during the English Civil War, when he served as a loyalist officer under the future King Charles II. Following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, May was rewarded for his loyalty with various appointments, including his position as keeper of the Privy Purse. He played a crucial role in the king's court, advising him on financial matters and managing the royal household. Despite his close association with the monarchy, May remained a man of principle and integrity. He was known for his austere lifestyle and his commitment to the welfare of the common people. In 1672, he played a key role in securing the passage of the Test Act, which required officeholders to take communion in the Church of England. This act helped to solidify the position of the Church of England and strengthen the monarchy. May's tenure as keeper of the Privy Purse came to an end with the death of King Charles II in 1685. He continued to serve the crown under King James II but resigned in 1688 following the Glorious Revolution. May died in 1698, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated and principled statesman who played a crucial role in the restoration of the monarchy and the maintenance of the Church of England.
