Grun was born on August 2, 1806, in the historic city of Brno, Moravia, then part of the Austrian Empire. Grun's literary career began in earnest in 1832 with the publication of his first novel, "Die Wanderjahre des Grafen Schönborn," which was met with critical acclaim.
