This exquisite 13th-century miniature depicts Alfonso II of Aragon, also known as Alfons I of Catalonia (1157-1196), and his queen consort, Sancha of Castile (1154/5-1208). Alfonso reigned as King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona from 1164 until his death in 1196. The couple is shown seated on a grand throne, symbolizing their royal authority. Alfonso is dressed in the robes of the House of Barcelona, adorned with the distinctive red and gold stripes, while Sancha wears the colors of her native Castile. Alfonso II was known for his piety and chastity, earning him the epithet "the Chaste." He was a patron of the arts and literature, particularly the troubadours, and his court was a center of cultural and intellectual activity during the Middle Ages. Sancha, the daughter of Alfonso VII of León and Castile, brought significant political alliances to the House of Aragon through her lineage. This image is taken from the Liber Feudorum Maior, a 13th-century manuscript on feudal law that was produced in the Crown of Aragon. The manuscript is now housed in the Archivo de la Corona de Aragon in Barcelona, Spain, and is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region during the Middle Ages.
