Aeschines was a prominent figure in ancient Athens during a time of political turmoil and cultural flourishing. Born into a wealthy family, he received an excellent education and was trained in rhetoric, the art of persuasive speaking. Aeschines began his political career as a supporter of the democratic faction, but later shifted allegiances and became an ally of the oligarchic party. His oratorical skills were unparalleled, and he used them to great effect in the Assembly and the law courts. One of his most famous speeches, Against Ctesiphon, was delivered in defense of a decree honoring Demosthenes, Aeschines' political rival. In this speech, Aeschines accused Demosthenes of corruption and treason, setting off a bitter feud between the two men. Despite his political maneuverings, Aeschines was a respected figure in Athenian society. He was a patron of the arts and a supporter of the city's cultural institutions. He was also a prolific writer, leaving behind a number of works on political and ethical themes.
