EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Adelaide Russell, nee Lister (1807-1838), in her prime. Adelaide was the first wife of the influential British statesman, John Russell, 1st Earl Russell (1792-1878). At the time of their marriage in 1826, Adelaide was a widow, having been previously married to Thomas, the 2nd Baron Ribblesdale. Her first marriage ended tragically with the death of her husband in 1825. John Russell, a prominent Whig politician, was a key figure in British politics during the 1830s and 1840s, serving as Lord Privy Seal, Home Secretary, and Prime Minister. Adelaide played a supportive role in her husband's political career, hosting lavish social events at their London residence, and acting as a diplomatic hostess. Despite her tragic past, Adelaide was known for her beauty, charm, and intelligence. This portrait, painted in the late 1820s, showcases her elegant features, refined style, and poised demeanor. Adelaide and John had three children together, but tragically, Adelaide died in childbirth in 1838, at the age of just 31. Her untimely death deeply affected John Russell, and he went into a period of mourning. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played a significant role in the history of British politics and society during the early 19th century. Adelaide Russell's story is a poignant reminder of the challenges and complexities of life in the Regency era, and the enduring power of love and family.
