EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the 1937 Coronation of King George VI is captured as the Royal Greys draw the shrouded state coach through the streets of Knightsbridge, London. The 4-ton golden coronation (state) coach, a symbol of British monarchy and history, is making its way back to Buckingham Palace after undergoing meticulous renovations by a renowned coach-building firm in Chelsea. First used at the opening of Parliament during the reign of King George III, this magnificent coach has been a part of every coronation since that of King George IV. Its grandeur and significance are undeniable, making it a crucial element in the grand ceremonial procession. As the clock ticked closer to the coronation day, the coach was carefully hidden from public view, shrouded in cloth as it underwent repairs and refurbishments. The Royal Greys, an elite regiment of horse-drawn carriage drivers, were tasked with pulling the coach through the bustling streets of London, their horses proudly leading the way. The photograph captures a moment of history, as the golden coach, adorned with intricate designs and regal symbols, is returned to its rightful place, ready to play a pivotal role in the upcoming coronation ceremony. The scene is a testament to the rich history, tradition, and pageantry that surrounds the British monarchy. This photograph, taken in 1937, offers a glimpse into the preparations for one of the most significant events in British history. The Royal Greys, their horses, and the golden state coach, all make for a breathtaking sight as they navigate the streets of London, en route to Buckingham Palace.
