1750 Bolingbroke Champs Marie Marquise Villette Viscount

EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie Claire Des Champs de Maresilly, Marquise de Villette, was the second wife of Henry St. John, Viscount Bolingbroke. Born into a noble French family, Marie Claire's early life is not well documented. However, we know that she married Henry St. John, an English politician and writer, in 1734. At the time, St. John was in exile in France due to his opposition to the Hanoverian monarchy. This elegant portrait, dated around 1750, captures Marie Claire in the height of her beauty and sophistication. She is depicted wearing a lavish robe of deep blue velvet, trimmed with ermine and adorned with intricate gold embroidery. Her hair is styled in the latest fashion, piled high and adorned with pearls and diamonds. Her expression is serene and confident, reflecting the poise and grace of a woman of high rank. Marie Claire's marriage to St. John was a significant event in his life. She provided him with much-needed financial support and social connections, enabling him to continue his political activities. Together, they lived in exile in France until St. John's death in 1751. After St. John's death, Marie Claire returned to France and lived out the rest of her days in relative obscurity. This portrait, however, remains a testament to her beauty and the important role she played in the life of one of the most influential political figures of the time. The exact location and artist of this portrait are unknown, but it is a striking example of the opulence and elegance of the French court in the mid-18th century.
