1764 1794 Elisabeth Marie Sister

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic beauty and tragic fate of Marie Elisabeth of France, sister of the ill-fated King Louis XVI. Born on December 22, 1764, Marie Elisabeth was the fourth daughter of King Louis XV and Marie Josepe of Saxony. Known for her striking blue eyes and elegant features, she was a favorite of her father and an influential figure at the French court. However, Marie Elisabeth's life was marked by tragedy and heartache. In 1770, her mother died, leaving her and her siblings to be raised by their authoritarian and domineering grandmother, Madame de Pompadour. Despite this, Marie Elisabeth continued to captivate the hearts of the French people, and in 1775, she was betrothed to the Duke of Parma, the future ruler of the Spanish Netherlands. The marriage was unhappy, and Marie Elisabeth was forced to leave France for the Spanish court. She spent the next 15 years in exile, longing for her homeland and her family. In 1792, the French Revolution began, and the monarchy was overthrown. Marie Elisabeth's brother, King Louis XVI, and his family were taken prisoner, and in 1794, they were all put on trial and executed. Marie Elisabeth, who had been living in safety in Austria, was devastated by the news. She spent the rest of her life in mourning, never again finding happiness or peace. She died on December 10, 1794, just a few months after her brother's execution. This haunting portrait, taken in 1794, shows Marie Elisabeth in the final months of her life. Her sad eyes and somber expression speak of the sorrow and loss that had consumed her. The portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of the French Revolution and the tragic fate of the royal family.
