1254 1321 Brabant Hardi I Ii Marie Philippe

EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie de Brabant, born in 1321, was the second wife of Philippe III le Hardi, King of France. Daughter of Jean III, Duke of Brabant, Marie brought significant political alliances to the French royal court through her lineage. Her marriage to Philippe III, which took place in 1347, was an essential step in the ongoing power struggle between the French and the English monarchies. Philippe III, also known as Philippe the Bold, was the eldest son of King John II of France and the grandson of Philip VI. He was a key figure in the Hundred Years War, which pitted the French and English monarchies against each other for control of the French throne. Marie's connection to the Duchy of Brabant provided Philippe with valuable diplomatic leverage. The image depicts Marie de Brabant in regal attire, adorned with a crown and wearing a richly embroidered robe. Her expression is serene, reflecting the composure and grace expected of a queen. The background is simple, with a plain gold backdrop that emphasizes the intricacy of her clothing and the jewels in her crown. Marie de Brabant's reign as queen of France was marked by political intrigue and diplomatic maneuvering. She played a crucial role in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Brétigny in 1360, which temporarily put an end to the Hundred Years War. Marie's influence extended beyond her role as a queen consort, as she also acted as regent during her husband's absences and managed the affairs of the Duchy of Brabant. Despite the challenges she faced, Marie de Brabant remained a steadfast and effective ruler. Her legacy as a diplomat, queen, and regent continues to be celebrated in French and European history. This evocative image captures the elegance and power of a woman who played a pivotal role in shaping the course of French and European history in the 14th century.
