EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the pivotal moment in ancient Greek history known as the Battle of Marathon, which took place on September 490 BC. The scene unfolds at the eponymous town of Marathon in Greece, where an alliance of 11,000 Athenians and Plataeans, led by the brilliant military strategist Miltiades, courageously faced the formidable Persian army of 60,000 soldiers under the command of King Darius Hystaspes. The Persian invasion of Greece, instigated by the sack of Athens in 490 BC, had left the city in ruins. Darius, determined to complete the conquest, amassed a vast army and set sail for Greece. Upon hearing of the imminent Persian threat, Miltiades and his allies marched to Marathon to confront the enemy. Despite being outnumbered, the Greeks employed their superior tactics and discipline to great effect. The Persian forces, taken aback by the Greek phalanx formation, were unable to break through the defensive line. In the decisive moment, the Athenian hoplites, led by Miltiades, charged at the Persian flank, causing chaos and confusion among the enemy ranks. The Persians were routed, and their retreating army was pursued relentlessly by the victorious Greeks. This print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, beautifully captures the heroism and determination of the Greek forces at the Battle of Marathon. The image serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the ancient Greeks and their ability to defy seemingly insurmountable odds. The victory at Marathon is considered a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars, marking the beginning of the end for Persian expansion into Europe.
