EDITORS COMMENTS
Major Edward Corringham 'Mick' Mannock: A British Flying Ace in the Great War This evocative photograph captures the dashing figure of Major Edward Corringham 'Mick' Mannock, a British flying ace during the First World War. Born in 1887, Mannock joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 and quickly distinguished himself as a formidable pilot. By the time this image was taken in June 1918 at St Omer in Northern France, Mannock had already amassed an impressive record, with 73 confirmed victories, making him the highest scoring British pilot of the war. Mannock's bravery and skill were recognized with numerous awards, including the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest military decoration in the British honours system, which was posthumously awarded to him in 1919. He also received the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and Military Cross (MC). Sadly, this photograph was taken just a month before Mannock's untimely death on July 25, 1918. He was killed in action during a dogfight with German planes over France, at the height of his military career. Mannock's legacy as a hero of the Great War lives on, and this image is a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the brave men and women who served in the skies during this pivotal period in history. The 1st Squadron of the Royal Air Force, to which Mannock belonged, was a key player in the aerial warfare of the First World War. The squadron was renowned for its daring exploits and played a crucial role in gaining air superiority for the Allied forces. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of one of its most celebrated members, a man who continues to inspire awe and admiration to this day.
