EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraved portrait captures the likeness of Marie Tussaud, born Marie Grosholtz, in her later years, around 1845. Tussaud (1761-1850) was a groundbreaking figure in the world of art and sculpture. Born in Strasbourg, France, she began her career as a wax modeler under the tutelage of Philippe Curtius, a wax sculptor. After Curtius's death in 1810, Tussaud inherited his collection of wax models and continued to add to it, eventually amassing over 400 figures. In 1835, Tussaud imported her collection to London and opened the Madame Tussauds Waxwork Museum, which quickly became a popular tourist attraction. Her lifelike and intricately detailed wax figures, which ranged from historical figures to famous celebrities, fascinated visitors from all walks of life. Tussaud's innovative use of wax as a medium for sculpture paved the way for future artists and museums. Despite her success, Tussaud's life was not without hardship. She faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties and the loss of her workshop in a fire. But she persevered, continuing to create and add to her collection until her death on April 20, 1850, at the age of 89. This portrait serves as a testament to her remarkable talent and enduring legacy as a pioneering wax sculptor.
