EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a pivotal moment in the life of Martin Luther, the German theologian and monk whose ideas sparked the Protestant Reformation. In 1521, Luther's writings, which challenged the Catholic Church's doctrines and selling of indulgences, were condemned by the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. The Diet of Worms, a legislative assembly, was convened in 1521 to address the growing religious unrest. Luther was summoned to appear before the assembly and recant his writings. Faced with the choice between recantation and excommunication, Luther refused to back down from his beliefs. As a result, he was declared an outlaw and a heretic, and a price was put on his head. To protect Luther from the authorities, the Elector of Saxony, Frederick the Wise, arranged for him to go into hiding. In this print, Luther is depicted in disguise, disguised as Junker George, a commoner name. The Elector's protection allowed Luther to continue writing and spreading his ideas, which would eventually lead to the establishment of Protestantism in Europe. This print is a testament to the courage and determination of Martin Luther in the face of persecution. It is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of his ideas on the religious and political landscape of Europe during the 16th century. The date of 1483 is incorrect in the caption, as Luther was born in 1483, but the print itself is likely from a later period. Despite this error, the print remains an important historical artifact that sheds light on a pivotal moment in European history.
