This striking print depicts King Louis XII of France (1462-1515) leading his invading army through the Italian peninsula during the Italian Wars of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The Italian Wars were a series of conflicts between various Italian city-states and European powers, including France, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire, for control of the Italian peninsula. Louis XII came to power in 1498 and quickly set his sights on expanding the French kingdom. In 1499, he launched an invasion of Milan, which was then ruled by Ludovico Sforza. After a successful siege of the city, Louis was crowned King of Milan in 1500. This victory marked the beginning of a string of successes for the French monarch in Italy. In the print, Louis XII is depicted in full regalia, wearing a fur-trimmed robe and a crown on his head, as he rides at the head of his army. Surrounded by his nobles and soldiers, he leads his troops forward with determination and resolve.
