This evocative print depicts Louis De Berquin (1489-1529), a prominent French Protestant reformer and martyr. De Berquin was born in Bordeaux, France, during a time when the Catholic Church held significant power and influence over the country's religious and political landscape. Despite the risks, De Berquin became an ardent advocate for Protestantism, translating and disseminating Protestant texts in defiance of the Church's prohibitions. In 1529, De Berquin was arrested and brought before the Inquisition in Paris for heresy. Despite being tortured and offered leniency if he recanted, De Berquin remained steadfast in his beliefs, refusing to renounce his faith. He was subsequently sentenced to be burned at the stake in Place Maubert in Paris on May 24, 1529.
