Los Angeles Pigeon Farm, California

Los Angeles Pigeon Farm, overlooking the Los Angeles River and surrounded by fields. Hundreds of pigeons perched on top of two of the cotes. The Farm was established in 1898 and located alongside the Los Angeles River and across from Elysian Park. It benefited from its proximity to the railroad tracks, as the free-flying pigeons could scavenge grain dropped from passing railroad cars. In 1914, heavy rains caused the Los Angeles river to flood, and much of the farm was washed away. Many of the estimated 500, 000 birds were killed as a result of the damage. Date: circa 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the Los Angeles Pigeon Farm, located alongside the Los Angeles River in California, circa 1910. The farm, established in 1898, was surrounded by expansive fields and overlooked the scenic Elysian Park. Hundreds of pigeons can be seen perched atop two of the farm's distinctive dove cotes, or lofts, which provided shelter and protection for the birds. The farm's proximity to the railroad tracks was a significant advantage, as the free-flying pigeons could scavenge grain dropped from passing trains. The thriving pigeon population is estimated to have reached over 500,000 birds. However, tragedy struck in 1914 when heavy rains caused the Los Angeles River to flood. Much of the farm was destroyed, and many of the precious pigeons were unfortunately lost in the devastation. This photograph offers a glimpse into a unique and intriguing chapter of California's history, showcasing the serene beauty of the farm and the vast flock of pigeons that once called it home. The image is a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between nature and the environment, and the potential impact of natural disasters on even the most seemingly idyllic settings.
