EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures Henry Stewart, 1st Earl of Bothwell and 2nd Earl of Orkney, better known as Henry, Lord Darnley, the controversial and enigmatic second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. Born in Scotland in 1545, Darnley was the cousin of Mary and the father of James I of England. The image, created around 1565, depicts Darnley in the height of Renaissance fashion, wearing a voluminous cloak lined with ermine fur, a ruff collar, and a feathered hat adorned with pearls and precious stones. His attire is completed with a sword at his side and a decorative doublet, featuring intricate gold buttons. The historical context of this portrait is significant, as it was created during the tumultuous period of Mary's reign in Scotland. Darnley's marriage to Mary in 1565 was a politically motivated alliance aimed at securing Scottish support against English claims to the Scottish throne. However, their union was fraught with tension and conflict, culminating in Darnley's untimely death in 1567, which was widely suspected to have been orchestrated by Mary's subsequent husband, James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Darnley's life and death, this portrait offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Scottish court during the late 16th century. The intricate details of Darnley's clothing, the rich textures of the fur and velvet, and the regal bearing of the subject all serve to underscore the power and prestige of the Scottish monarchy during this period. This image invites us to explore the complex and fascinating history of Mary, Queen of Scots and her enigmatic husbands.
