SIR CHARLES EUAN-SMITHs MISSION TO THE COURT OF MOROCCO: THE RUINS OF VOLUBILIS, NEAR FEZ; These ruins are about 20 miles from Fez, and consist of the remains of a large Triumphal Arch, the Forum, and quantity of walls. Between the remaining portions of the Forum are seen the town and shrine of Mulai Edris, named after the great Moslem saint, and father of the founder of Fez. No one may live in Milai Edris, which is also called Zarhun, except the descendants of the Saint, and no one but a true believer may enter it, on any pretence. 1892 engraving

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sir Charles Euan-Smith's mission to the court of Morocco in the 19th century. The image showcases the mesmerizing ruins of Volubilis, located approximately 20 miles from Fez. These ancient remains include a grand Triumphal Arch, remnants of a Forum, and numerous walls that stand as testaments to a bygone era. Amidst the remaining portions of the Forum, one can glimpse the town and shrine of Mulai Edris. This sacred place is named after an esteemed Muslim saint who was also revered as the father of Fez's founder. Interestingly, only descendants of this great saint are permitted to reside in Mulai Edris or Zarhun, as it is sometimes called. Moreover, access into this hallowed ground is restricted solely to true believers; no pretense will grant entry. The engraving itself dates back to 1892 and exemplifies the illustrative techniques prevalent during that time period. Its vintage charm and retro style transport us back to an era where historic art flourished under Victorian influence. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Liszt Collection's archives, we are reminded not only of Morocco's rich history but also its cultural significance in shaping our world today.
