The heroic Charlotte la Corday, upon her trial, at the bar of the revolutionary tribunal
The heroic Charlotte la Corday, upon her trial, at the bar of the revolutionary tribunal of Paris, July 17, 1793, Gillray, James, 1756-1815, artist, engraving, Charlotte Corday standing before the judges of the Revolutionary Tribunal with the body of Marat which lying between them. She responds to the Tribunal, Wretches, I did not expect to appear before you - I always thought that I should be delivered up to the rage of the people, torn in pieces, & that my head, stuck on the top of a pike, would have preceded Marat on his state bed, to serve as a rallying point to Frenchmen, if there still are any worthy of that name. But, happen what will, if I have the honours of the guillotine, & my clay-cold remains are buried, they will soon have conferred upon them the honours of the Pantheon; and my memory will be more honoured in France than that of Judith in Bethulia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the heroic Charlotte la Corday during her trial at the bar of the revolutionary tribunal in Paris on July 17,1793. Created by artist James Gillray, this engraved image showcases Corday standing before the judges with the lifeless body of Marat lying between them. In a powerful response to the Tribunal, she exclaims, "Wretches, I did not expect to appear before you - I always thought that I should be delivered up to the rage of the people, torn in pieces. . ". Despite her expectations of a gruesome fate and having her head displayed on a pike alongside Marat's body as a symbol for Frenchmen, Corday remains defiant. She believes that even if she meets death by guillotine and is buried in obscurity, her memory will eventually be honored in France more than Judith's was in Bethulia. This historic artwork evokes nostalgia for an era long past. Its retro-styled engraving technique transports us back to Victorian times when such illustrations were highly valued cultural artifacts. The aged appearance adds depth and authenticity to this traditional piece of historic art. As we gaze upon this print from Liszt Collection's archives, we are reminded of Charlotte la Corday's bravery and unwavering determination amidst tumultuous times.
