Baghdad Captured Iraq Lieutenant Maude Mesopotamia Stanley Ww 1

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Stanley Maude (1860-1928) stands proudly among his British troops, having recently captured the city of Baghdad on March 11, 1917, during the Mesopotamia Campaign of World War I. Maude, who had taken command of the British forces in the region just a few months prior, led his troops through a grueling and arduous campaign against the Ottoman Turks, who had held Baghdad since the early 16th century. The capture of Baghdad was a significant victory for the Allied Powers, as it marked the end of Ottoman control in Iraq and opened up the Middle East to British influence. Maude's troops had faced numerous challenges during the campaign, including harsh desert conditions, disease, and a determined enemy. But through their determination and bravery, they were able to push on and ultimately achieve success. Maude is shown here in his military uniform, wearing the stars of a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath on his chest. He is surrounded by a group of soldiers, some of whom are saluting him, while others look on with a mix of pride and exhaustion. In the background, the city of Baghdad can be seen in the distance, its minarets and domes rising above the desert landscape. This photograph is a testament to the courage and determination of the British troops who served in Mesopotamia during World War I, and to the leadership of Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Stanley Maude, who guided them to victory against the odds. It is a powerful reminder of a pivotal moment in the history of the Middle East and the wider world.
