The Section des Quinze-Vingts, one of the most vociferous and influential revolutionary groups in Paris, is depicted here in the midst of a heated meeting. The men, dressed in their distinctive red Phrygian caps, raise their fists and voices in unison, their faces etched with determination and resolve. The backdrop of the print is the ominous fortifications of the city, a reminder of the impending threat of war and the urgency of their cause. Historically, the Section des Quinze-Vingts emerged during the French Revolution as a radical and militant organization, dedicated to the defense of the people's rights and the overthrow of the monarchy. They took their name from the Hôtel des Quinze-Vingts, a hospital for the poor and destitute, which had been a symbol of charity and compassion in Paris for centuries. However, by the late 18th century, the hospital had become a hotbed of revolutionary activity, and the group that formed around it became a powerful force in the streets of Paris. As the revolutionary tide swept through France, the Quinze-Vingts played a key role in the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, and the subsequent fall of the monarchy in September 1792.
