EDITORS COMMENTS
Leon Alexandre Delhomme, also known as Alexandre-Frederic-Marie-Eugene Delhomme or simply as Demare, was a renowned French sculptor of the late 19th century. Born on March 25, 1841, in Paris, Delhomme showed an early aptitude for art, studying under the tutelage of renowned sculptors such as Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Jules Dalou. Delhomme's artistic career began in earnest in the 1860s, and he quickly gained recognition for his realistic and expressive works. He was particularly known for his figurative sculptures, which often depicted historical or mythological subjects. One of his most famous works is the monumental statue of Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc) that stands in the Place des Pyramides in Paris. Delhomme's talent was not limited to sculpture alone. He was also an accomplished painter and draftsman, and his works were regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon. In addition, he was a dedicated teacher, passing on his knowledge and skills to a new generation of artists. Despite his many accomplishments, Delhomme faced numerous challenges throughout his career. He was a prolific artist, and the demands of creating large-scale public monuments often left him in financial straits. He also faced personal hardships, including the loss of his wife and several of his children. Despite these challenges, Delhomme continued to produce works of great beauty and significance. He passed away on January 13, 1895, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences today. This photograph, taken in the later years of his life, captures the intensity and focus of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of artistic excellence.
