EDITORS COMMENTS
October 1914: The Mass Exodus of Belgians from Antwerp as the German Advance Nears Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the early days of World War I, hundreds of thousands of Belgians made their desperate getaway from the city of Antwerp, knowing that in just a few short hours, the German army would be advancing. The image captured in this photograph, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts the scene of a massive exodus as civilians, many carrying their meager possessions, make their way out of the city. Antwerp, a major port city located in western Belgium, had been a strategic target for the German forces since the beginning of the war. The city's fortifications had been under siege since late August, and by October, the German army was closing in. Faced with the imminent threat of invasion, the Belgian government ordered a general evacuation of the city. The scene in this photograph is one of desperation and determination. The crowds of people, many of them women and children, are making their way out of the city as best they can, some on foot, others on bicycles or in carts. The streets are filled with the sounds of clattering hooves and the cries of children, as the people of Antwerp leave behind their homes and businesses, and head towards the safety of neutral Holland. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war, and the desperate measures people will take to protect themselves and their loved ones. As the German army entered Antwerp just hours after this photograph was taken, the city was left deserted, its streets empty and silent. This image is a testament to the events of that fateful October day in 1914, and the courage and resilience of the people of Antwerp in the face of adversity.
