EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the legendary clash between the Lapithes, a noble people of Thessaly, and the centaurs, half-human, half-horse creatures, at the marriage feast of Briseis. According to Greek mythology, Briseis was a prized captive of the Myrmidon king Achilles, who was not invited to the Lapithean wedding. Insulted by this snub, the centaurs, led by the infamous figure of Eurytus, gatecrashed the celebration, intending to carry off the bride and other women. The Lapithes, however, were not about to let their feast be ruined. Armed with weapons and ready for battle, they bravely defended their women and their honor. The ensuing chaos was a scene of frenzied combat, with the Lapithes using their human intelligence and weaponry to outmaneuver their unruly, drunken opponents. This print, a testament to the rich history and mythology of ancient Greece, captures the moment of triumph for the Lapithes. Their renown, born from their successful defense against the centaurs, is immortalized in this image. The intricate details of the artwork show the centaurs in various stages of battle, their expressions a mix of determination, surprise, and defeat. The Lapithes, on the other hand, are depicted as determined and resolute, their victory a symbol of courage and unity. The marriage feast of Briseis, a seemingly simple event, became the stage for one of the most famous battles in Greek mythology. This print, with its vivid colors and intricate details, brings the story to life, transporting us back to the ancient world and the heroic deeds of the Lapithes.
