Lanlivery Church tower, Cornwall. Around 1925

Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in some cases, painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the picturesque Lanlivery Church tower in Cornwall, taken around 1925 by Major Arthur William Gill. A prominent figure in Cornwall during the 1920s and 1930s, Major Gill was not only an amateur photographer but also a well-known presenter of stills and cine film to various esteemed groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. Using his ordinary camera, Major Gill captured numerous quarter plate slides with great proficiency. However, what truly sets his work apart is his artistic touch - some of these slides were meticulously hand-painted by him to enhance their visual impact. This unique approach adds a layer of depth and beauty to his photographs. The image itself transports us back in time to the charming village of Lanlivery in the early 20th century. The church tower stands tall against a backdrop of rolling hills and clear blue skies. Its architectural details are highlighted beautifully through Major Gill's lens and expertly enhanced with delicate brushstrokes. This print is part of the collection at the Royal Cornwall Museum, offering viewers a glimpse into both Major Arthur William Gill's talent as an artist-photographer and the timeless allure of Lanlivery Church tower.
