This photograph, taken in the early 1910s, showcases the enchanting Chinese Pavilion and Japanese Pagoda located in the residential suburb of Laeken, Brussels, Belgium. Commissioned by King Leopold II in the early 20th century, these architectural wonders were built to showcase his personal collection of Chinese and Japanese art. The Chinese Pavilion, designed by architect Alexandre Marcel, boasts halls adorned in the opulent styles of Louis XIV and Louis XVI. The interior is a breathtaking fusion of Eastern and Western design elements, with Chinese motifs, chinaware, and silverware adding to the exotic allure. The Japanese Pagoda, inspired by a construction King Leopold II had seen at the Paris Exposition of 1900, stands proudly in the background. Architect Marcel was once again tasked with bringing this vision to life. The pagoda, a traditional Japanese tower, is a stunning representation of the architectural art form, with its multi-tiered roof and intricate wooden detailing. King Leopold II's passion for Eastern culture and his desire to bring a piece of it to Belgium resulted in these magnificent structures, which continue to captivate visitors to this day. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of these iconic landmarks in the heart of Brussels.
